Both movies have all the standard ingredients, however: Two laconic leading men, two all-girl teams, one ethnic driver, one dumb law enforcement officer, several exploding gas tanks, no end of incompetent highway patrolmen, a helicopter and a car that breaks in half. An eclectic group of people take part in a secret, and illegal, cross country road race. There are some regrettable moments of old-fashioned Seventies sexism but the whole movie is…Michael Sarrazin channels Peter Fonda in this super '70s illegal car race movie. The cast is an ensemble so the characters don’t get explored much, but it’s consistently funny despite its age. Cannonball Run makes this feel a little pointless.Every film and documentary on Letterboxd that is about, or tangibly involves, motor racing. And it never makes you want to flee the theater.An example. What I meant to say, before interrupting myself, is that although we are all going to have the greatest difficulty even remembering the name of "The Gumball Rally" in three months' time, it is a pleasant, slick, inoffensive entertainment. For better or worse, The Gumball Rally was the catalyst for a short-lived cycle of "illegal cross-country race" flicks. Mostly auto and motorcycle racing but…I liked this when I was younger and is probably a better film for a younger audience. Which I was.The biggest problem with this movie is that there is another similar one made 5 years later, which is a lot funnier and memorable. The cast still does pretty capable work and the characters have enough quirks to make up for lack of development. It's a light hearted film that revolves around a race with everyone saying gumball. Having recently revisited both Cannonball Run movies and The Gumball Rally...I can easily say this is the best of the three movies.Almost a guilty pleasure but a bit more guilty than pleasure.It’s maybe a bit long, but it’s mostly fun so I’d gladly watch it again.The Gumball Rally is an easily watchable race movie. and a concealed bomb blows up his car.
